Members of Newquay’s two Lions Clubs met up together for a social evening with a competitive edge as they competed for the Dennis Arbuthnott Trophy, a prize donated by the Newquay Lions’ late Charter President who passed away recently following well over 50 years of service to the community.
The challenge this year was ten-pin bowling and it took place at Trevarrian Holiday Park’s four lanes where the Lions enjoyed a very social environment and a bit of grub to finish the evening off.
Towan Blystra Lions, who won the trophy on the last occasion it was played for before COVID, managed to retain the prize, but only by the smallest of margins as both teams had their fair shares of bowling balls in the gutter as well as some very impressive ‘strikes’. But winning the trophy came second to the great atmosphere of the evening as the two clubs which, together, boast over 50 Lions members, got together to relax and enjoy each others company.
Lion Jill Willmott of Newquay Lions, who organised the event said: “We had a minutes silence for Lion Dennis and I know how much he meant to Lions from both clubs because of his tireless service to the community and his infectious personality. It was great for the two clubs to get together again to compete for the trophy he donated several years ago.”
Lion President Jill Bunt from Towan Blystra Lions added: “It was a thoroughly enjoyable evening and just one of many social events we like to enjoy with our fellow Lions. A big thank you to Lion Jill for organising it and for the Trevarrian for hosting the event. Retaining the trophy was great but we know it will only make Newquay Lions that more determined to get it back next time. A really enjoyable evening.”
Both Lions Clubs in Newquay are part of Lions Clubs International whose motto is ‘We Serve’ and Newquay Lions Club have been doing that since 1972, with Towan Blystra having been formed more recently in 2008. Both clubs can be easily found on the internet and Facebook and welcome any enquiries about joining them in their voluntary work and fund-raising they do across Newquay and district.
