Newquay Towan Blystra Lions Club are challenging brave teams to take on the might of the incoming Atlantic tide, and prove they have what it takes to be declared the ‘Last Man Standing’.
Back for the third year by popular demand, the event invites teams of between two and four people to construct a mound of sand on Towan Beach, and see how it fares against the tide.
However, as Lion Matt Bunt explains, there is a bit more to it: “Each mound must be able to support all members of the team, who must all stand on it as the tide comes in around them. The teams will get around 30 minutes in which to finish their construction.
“Whichever team has the last person standing, with their feet still dry, are the winners.
“It was great to see the ingenuity that went into the various entries last year” continued Matt.
“Everyone had such a fun time, and even for those not taking part, it was a great spectator sport as we watched the team-members cling onto each other to avoid their legs being dunked in the drink!”
The event costs £10 per team to take part, and the money raised will be split between Newquay Towan Blystra Lions to support local causes, and a charity of the winning team’s choice.
Matt added: “We are also happy for businesses, organisations and charities to come in their branded T-Shirts too, for extra publicity.”
The event takes place at Newquay Towan Beach at 3:45pm on Sunday 15 June 2013 – digging commences at 4:00pm.
