The ever-popular Brains of Newquay Quiz, hosted by Newquay Towan Blystra Lions Club, returned to Newquay Golf Club on Sunday 6 July 2025 for a fun-filled evening of trivia and charity.
This unique annual event, which combines brainpower with community spirit, saw 20 teams competing on behalf of local good causes and charities. All prize money—funded through the Lions Club’s fundraising activities such as Newquay Beer Festival, Santa’s Sleigh, and the Giant Easter Egg Raffle—is donated directly to the nominated causes of each team.
This year, Precocious Penguins took top honours, winning £400 for Newquay Foodbank by securing both overall victory and the General Knowledge round. The team is made up of members of Newquay Road Runners and, led by captain Ray Frith, also comprised Colin Martin, Steph Brelsford and Matt Frith.
Other major winners included:
Hopeless Case – £300 for Newquay RNLI (2nd place + winner of Round 2)
Bloomin’ Lovely – £200 for Newquay in Bloom (Winner of Round 6 + All-Nighter sheet quiz)
The Flukes – £100 for Newquay Marine Group (3rd place)
Heli-Quizzers – £100 for Cornwall Air Ambulance (Winner of the Music Round, sponsored by Radio Newquay)
Wides Byes and No Balls – £100 for Newquay Cricket Club (Winner of Round 3)
Silver Belles – £100 for Headland Therapy Boxes (Winner of Round 5)
All remaining teams received consolation prizes of £50 for their chosen good causes, ensuring that every participant left with a win for their community. These included donations to:

Lions Vice President Chris Bernard, who presented the trophy to the overall winners said:
“Brains of Newquay is a fantastic tradition—bringing people together for a great evening, while making sure our local charities benefit. Every team’s effort helps someone in the community.”
Quizmaster for the night, Lion Carl Leadbetter told everyone who attended the event how much the Lions appreciated their support and added: “Please have a look at some of the things the Lions do and, if you have a bit of spare time, consider coming along and joining us. It makes a real difference and helps support our community.”
